COMMISSIONING

Piazza del Campidoglio In my studio I create speculative pieces and work on commissioned projects. Often a potential client will see my work at a show and our conversation begins. I work from verbal descriptions along with photographs or digital images. Whenever possible a house call or site visit to see and experience your space is best. The design process is often a collaborative one between the client and myself. I look, listen and am sensitive to your needs and desires. I take into consideration the aesthetic of the setting, the use of the room, the overall sense of design and taste and most of all your dreams and desires.

Sometimes a client is inspired by something I’ve already created and the piece is adapted to their specific location. Recently clients saw my oval lotus table at a show. They had been to Italy and my table reminded them of Michelangelo’s design for the Piazza del Campadoglio in Rome. They e-mailed the image, a conversation and site visit followed and led to the creation of a stunning kitchen table in silver and gold glass with transparent bronze windows.

Table In Process I enjoy the many conversations I’ve had with those who are inspired by the beauty and quality of my work. We dream the space, the room, the house and it’s so satisfying when I get the call, “We’re building the sunroom / deck / new kitchen...and you’re table~fountain will be the focal point”.

My glass mosaic furniture and table~fountains are functional sculptures, multidimensional and luscious. They’re a sensory delight to see, hear, touch and experience. My desire is to create beauty and harmony through form and function, to enhance your space and share the delight of creating something you will enjoy everyday.

MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUE

Glass mosaic has been used for centuries around the world. I’m blending an age old technique with modern materials and design. The overall shape and supportive substructure is an exterior wood composite. It’s very stable in both indoor and outdoor locations and can be cut to any shape or size. The wood is covered with a gorgeous rainbow iridescent glass that looks like peacock feathers. It shimmers and holds light in a mesmerizing way.

Tile ExampleI begin by doing small sketches to work out the overall shape of the piece and to get a sense of how the patten will flow. Then I blow up the design to full size. Two patterns are made - a simple one for the wood and a detailed one for the glass. Each piece of glass is carefully selected and cut by hand. The edges are seamed on a wet belt sander. The glass is adhered to the wood then grouted and sealed, just as you would a tile floor.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

WHERE DO YOUR IDEAS COME FROM?
My greatest inspiration comes from nature. I love color, rhythms and patterns, and how things unfold over time. I’m fascinated by nature repeating herself through the micro/macrocosm. I’m also inspired by world travels, architecture, sacred geometry, mythology and symbols.

The idea for table~fountains grew from making tabletop fountains and wanting them to be bigger. The idea for small tabletop fountains came from a trip to Hawaii where I was saturated with light, color, water, movement and sound. I came home to winter in New England and needed to express the beauty I’d experienced in the work I made.

The idea for mosaic was very practical - how to work with glass, such a fragile material - on such a large scale? On it’s own the glass would be both heavy and breakable. By combining it with wood issues of size, strength and durability are resolved.

ARE THEY BATTERY POWERED OR ELECTRIC?
All table~fountains require electricity. They come with a pump that circulates the water and an underwater halogen light. At night or in a darkened space the center area glows like a jewel.

HOW DO I TAKE CARE OF THE WATER?
Using distilled water will prolong the life of the pump, prevent calcium scale buildup and inhibit algae. As the distilled water evaporates just add more.

CAN THEY BE OUTDOORS?
Yes, mosaic has been used outdoors for centuries. With proper care and tending your outdoor piece will last a lifetime. An ideal location is a wooden deck or stone patio protected from falling branches, heavy winds and full sun. Over the winter drain the water and cover or bring indoors. Please specify for outdoor use when ordering.

HOW CAN I ORDER?
Please call to discuss your needs and wishes. All work is custom made when ordered and depending on where I am in my work and travel schedule may take 3-6 months to create. We will discuss and agree on the details and sign a Commissioning Contract. A non refundable 50% deposit is required. The balance is due upon completion prior to shipping or delivery of the work. Crating and shipping charges are additional.
